Surface smoothing

The process of surface smoothing

Refined & Functional

Surface smoothing results in uniform and smooth finishes, which improve component quality and reduce friction and wear. Such irregularities often arise during machining processes such as milling, turning, punching or laser cutting, and can impair the function and visual quality of components.

The surface smoothing process is used in numerous industrial sectors, particularly in metalworking, the Automotive industry, electronics manufacturing and Medical engineering. It helps to optimise the functionality of components, improve coatings and ensure a consistently high surface quality.

  • Reduced friction and wear
  • Uniform, high-quality surface finish
  • Better conditions for coatings and subsequent processes

Optimal surface quality to meet your requirements

Grinding performance, the shape and size of the Abrasive media all influence the surface finish; Walther Trowal manufactures a range of geometries and abrasiveness levels, allowing the process to be tailored to the workpiece, material and required surface finish. Optimal parameters are determined free of charge at the Test & Training Centre.

Time saved by combining smoothing and edge finishing in a single process

Mass finishing performs surface smoothing whilst simultaneously performing deburring and rounding off edges – this reduces the number of processing steps and produces a more uniform result.

Ideal machining, even for complex geometries

The abrasive media flow around the components and reach even hard-to-access areas, internal contours and undercuts – which is particularly relevant for complex-shaped or additively manufactured workpieces.

Surface smoothing using the vibratory finishing process

For uniform, high-quality surfaces

Surface smoothing is necessary not only when irregularities from previous processing are a problem, but also when grinding marks or scratches need to be removed, or when remnants of casting scale are adhering to the workpieces.

With mass finishing, virtually any desired surface finish can be achieved on parts made from a wide variety of materials – for example, aluminium, brass, steel or stainless steel. As the process is similar to deburring, edges are also deburred and rounded off during smoothing. The surface finish is largely determined by the type of machine, the machine settings and the material of the workpieces.

The abrasive media are equally important: highly abrasive media produce rougher surfaces than less abrasive ones. The surface roughness profile can also be specifically controlled by selecting the geometry of the abrasive media.

Examples of applications for surface smoothing

Workpieces

At Walther Trowal, we tailor the smoothing process specifically to the surface quality you require. The decisive factor here is not just the machine itself, but the interplay between the machine type, machining parameters, abrasive media and Compounds. This allows surface roughness, edge finishing and surface finish to be tailored to the workpiece and its intended function.
