Vibratory finishing or Blasting technology – depending on requirements
For the process steps
in the Foundry industry
In the Foundry industry, castings often exhibit residues of moulding material, burrs, sprues, oxide layers or other surface irregularities after the casting process, which must be removed for further use or subsequent manufacturing processes.
The most effective and efficient mass finishing processes are vibratory finishing and blasting.

In gravity and die-casting, the requirements for the surface finish of workpieces vary from product to product: some simply need to be deburred, whilst for others a specific surface roughness is required. For others still, a uniform colour finish or the precise edge rounding is essential.
To cater for this wide range of applications, Walther Trowal manufactures a broad spectrum of mass finishing and blasting systems that meet the requirements of the Foundry industry and operate in either batch or continuous mode.
As foundries often handle large quantities, continuous processing machines are usually required – be it the linear AV systems based on the vibratory finishing principle or the THM trough-belt blasting systems. Both processes can be highly automated and enable the cost-effective processing of large quantities whilst delivering reproducible results.
A high degree of automation thanks to vibratory finishing technology
Integrated into the manufacturing process
Vibratory finishing machines are primarily used in the Foundry industry for surface smoothing, removing flash and edge rounding.
Our AV continuous processing machines are used for very high part throughput. They are specially designed for processing with continuous workpiece feeding or cyclical feeding of workpieces. They are particularly suitable for
- the processing of robust, mass-produced parts of small and medium size, for example stamped and die-cast components
- Deburring and grinding of medium- and large-volume workpieces such as oil pans, cylinder head covers or pump housings
With their integrated parts logistics, they achieve a high degree of automation and thus become an integral part of the process chain.

Blasting technology for bulk materials and individual parts
Gentle continuous processing
In the Foundry industry, Blasting technology is often used in the form of THM trough-belt continuous blasting systems to reliably remove, for example, sand residues, scale, oxide layers and other contaminants. At the same time, the process produces a uniform surface finish.
Inside the trough, the workpieces are transported continuously and gently through the system, whilst being constantly tumbled and thus intensively blasted from all sides.
