Industrial robots in mass finishing technology

The new TR Finisher from Walther Trowal

A key feature of the TR-Finisher is its high degree of flexibility: it can be fitted with various workpiece holders, which we customise to suit the specific application. In our latest version, which we present on this page, a six-axis industrial robot is responsible for the precise guidance of the workpieces. By precisely immersing and moving the workpieces in the abrasive media or polishing granules, specific areas of the workpiece surface can be precisely machined and finished. For example, the contact surfaces of knee implants can be polished to a high gloss, whilst the rest of the surface is subjected to low grinding pressure.

Highly precise mass finishing

We have developed the TR-Finisher for the precision finishing of high-quality, complex workpieces that must meet the most stringent requirements on certain functional surfaces.

On the one hand, workpieces can be ground or polished only in specific areas; on the other hand, surfaces can be machined at a precisely defined angle.

Typical applications include the machining of workpieces with complex geometries, such as:

  • Implants
  • surgical instruments
  • turbine blades
  • Weapon components

The benefits
of the TR Finisher
at a glance

With its robot arm capable of movement along six axes, the TR-Finisher offers unprecedented freedom.

  • Precise, repeatable machining of individual areas of the workpiece surface
  • Fully automatic operation, including all component handling
  • Particularly short machining times thanks to high grinding pressure

Selective treatment

In the TR-Finisher, we use a six-axis industrial robot. It lowers the workpieces into the rotating work tank, which is filled with grinding or polishing media and Compounds, and positions them so that the areas of the surface to be ground or polished are exposed to the media at a defined angle. The relative movement between the workpieces and the abrasive media is generated by the rotation of the processing vessel.

The process water, which contains the abrasives from the workpieces and the abrasive media, drains through holes in the sieve basket, is treated in a centrifuge and returned to the circuit.

For high-gloss polishing using the dry process, the working vessel can be changed.

It is also possible to first grind the workpieces using a wet process in a tank filled with abrasive media. The robot arm then lowers the parts into a further tank filled with a medium such as crushed maize cobs for polishing.

Industrial robots for maximum precision

Fully automated handling

The entire process runs automatically: the robot retrieves a workpiece from the workpiece palletiser and lowers it into the grinding compound. Once it has been machined, the robot returns it to the palletiser and picks up the next one. The automated process not only saves on labour costs: the flow of material at a defined angle also ensures a high degree of reproducibility.
