Mass finishing technology for specialised requirements
Drag finishing systems for a high-gloss finish
We have developed the M-TDM series of drag finishing systems for the mass finishing of workpieces with high unit costs, which must have an excellent surface finish and require the utmost care during handling and machining, for example
- high-quality, delicate parts
- workpieces with intricate contours and complex geometries
- extremely hard materials that are difficult to machine
Examples of workpieces from the medical engineering sector include hip and knee joint implants, which must be polished to a high gloss. In the aerospace industry, engine blades are among the components that are machined. For these parts, surface smoothing and precise edge rounding are required. In the automotive industry, turbocharger impellers are among the components that are machined; these must not be damaged under any circumstances during machining.
Further examples of mass finishing in drag finishing systems include:
- Precision parts for pumps and compressors
- Workpieces made of cemented carbide
- Sintered parts

The M-TMD series drag finishing systems feature a carrier carousel with several spokes. Rotating satellites are mounted at the ends of these spokes, into which the workpieces are clamped individually. This ensures that they remain separate from one another during machining and do not come into contact with each other.
For machining, the carousel is lowered into the circular work tank, which contains the abrasive media or polishing media, and set in rotation. This creates relative movement between the parts and the abrasive media.
After each batch, the working tank can be set to vibrate. As the bed of abrasive media is constantly and evenly mixed in this way, Walther Trowal’s Drag finishing systems achieve a high degree of process reproducibility .

As the satellites on the spokes also rotate, the parts move through the stationary grinding mass on ‘epicycles’ – that is, in small circles within a larger one. The result is that the workpiece is subjected to a uniform flow of material from all directions, producing a particularly homogeneous surface.
